As a small way to say thank-you to my paid subscribers, I periodically send them snail mail, including a small poetry booklet. I had hoped to finish the most recent one by June, but the summer became quite busy with travel baseball. When our family went to Grand Bend for a few days last week, I made it a goal to spend a few hours every morning working on it. By the end of the week it was done!
We came home from Grand Bend to find out that our dear cat, Leo, was badly injured. We had to make the difficult decision to put him down. The whole thing was just so sad - I’m tearing up again thinking about it. I am working through my sadness of losing him, while also noticing the ways he will always be with me. This was one of the last photos I took of him- a reflection in my front door. It was a familiar scene - drinking coffee, writing and reading Rumi while Leo lingered close by.
The photo isn’t in the booklet, but I did include one of my garden, which was one of his favourite places to be:
The cat’s paws release the secret music lavender is composing,
The porch bells murmur ancient songs underneath my being,
A child snaps off an iris flower while I’m not looking,
Our wanting is the unfolding lips of peonies.
This time I have title for the book - The Soul’s Secret Wishing. For me, Soul is the deep part of me that desires wholeness, and isn’t willing to rest until it gets what it wants.
I will be mailing these booklets out soon. If you aren’t a paid subscriber, but would like one for yourself, send an e-transfer to sarahkivellphotography@gmail.com (with your address in the message) and I will be sure to send one your way! They are $12. (Or, you can become a yearly subscriber and receive a booklet and other “treats” in the mail, supporting my process and all the things I make!)
Thanks!
